Control Resonant gameplay with gravity anomalies and transforming weapon
Lead Gameplay Designer at Remedy Entertainment Sergey Mohov presented an extended gameplay video of Control Resonant during the State of Play presentation. The footage shows Dylan in action hunting a Resonant through the shifting landscape of the West Incursion Zone – one of the areas accessible early in the game. The location appears familiar at first glance but has been reshaped by otherworldly forces actively tearing reality apart.
Control Resonant isn't an open-world game, but rather a collection of large, distinct, and expansive zones filled with side activities, hidden encounters, and optional discoveries. A strong central narrative guides players through the world while leaving room to explore what's been left behind in the chaos. The West Incursion Zone gradually becomes more distorted – architecture folds in on itself and gravity behaves unpredictably.
The video features Zoe De Vera, an FBC Field Agent and one of the sequel's new characters. Zoe acts as Dylan's handler in the field, providing guidance and context as events spiral out of control. Her relationship with Dylan forms an important part of the story, pushing the protagonist to confront who he is, what he's capable of, and what it means to hold onto his humanity amid a supernatural crisis.
As Manhattan grows more twisted, traversal between zones becomes both a gameplay challenge and a spectacle. Dylan's supernatural abilities, such as Reach, allow him to navigate spaces that no longer obey regular physics. Players will also encounter Gravity Anomalies – areas where gravity and orientation shift entirely.
By activating his Shift ability, Dylan can adapt on the fly, redirecting momentum and movement to traverse these spaces. A road might be flipped upside-down above the protagonist, or a building's roof tilted sideways, acting as a vertical bridge. If players reach these surfaces, they can walk on them normally. The challenge lies in re-learning what "ground" means and spotting pathways on surfaces now at war with gravity.
Dylan wields the Aberrant, an otherworldly shapeshifting melee weapon that's central to the combat arsenal. As shown in the video, it transforms into multiple forms:
Hammer
Blades
Scythe
Fists
This provides a versatile toolkit for defining combat approaches. Other forms exist, but Remedy is keeping them secret for now.
Progression revolves around building the perfect combat flow. Players constantly expand their arsenal by unlocking new Aberrant forms, supernatural abilities, and combos. Deeper customization systems allow specialization and power-ups for favorite moves. Before combat, players can equip chosen abilities and weapon forms to create a unique fighting approach, whether on the ground or in the air.
The video also introduced one of the game's powerful boss enemies known as Resonants. Resonants are remnants of people who once held great power, now corrupted and twisted by the same mysterious force threatening reality. While encountering Resonants is dangerous, defeating them is the primary way Dylan expands his supernatural arsenal, as each vanquished enemy rewards a brand-new combat ability. This is why the game is called Control Resonant.
Remedy promises to share additional information in the coming months. Control Resonant releases in 2026.
