ARC Raiders players aren't happy about the wind turbine on the hurricane map

Embark Studios released the Shrouded Sky update for ARC Raiders, bringing a new weather condition to the extraction shooter – a hurricane. Strong winds, flying debris, reduced visibility, and shield degradation immediately shook up the usual gameplay loop. But the community's attention landed on something else entirely: a wind turbine on the map that barely rotates at the height of the storm.

A player named Cripplechip posted an ironic thread on Reddit titled "New hurricane map effect is UNPLAYABLE," pairing it with footage of a slowly spinning turbine in the middle of the raging weather.

Predictably, plenty of comments piled on with jokes about developers being careless, but others stepped in to defend Embark – pointing out that the turbine's behavior is actually quite realistic. This isn't a hand-cranked windmill, after all.

A player from Taiwan explained that during typhoons, wind turbines do spin slowly – they don't stop completely, but they don't spin up to full speed either. Others added that in real life, blades pitch edge-on into the wind, a process called "feathering." This lockout prevents damage during extreme conditions.

One player went into detail about wind turbine safety systems, covering electromagnetic braking and automatic blade pitch control. According to them, these systems are fully automated and built around mechanical components with minimal electronics, allowing them to operate without maintenance.

In the context of the ARC Raiders world, set in 2181, the turbines could plausibly still have their automated safety systems intact – and might even be powering parts of the surrounding infrastructure.

Beyond the turbines, players have been discussing the tactical side of the new mode. Character shields spark and glow blue when hit by flying debris, making raiders visible from a long distance. The community quickly figured out that dropping the shield while outside is an effective stealth tactic – risky, but viable. Snipers, meanwhile, are thrilled, since the blue flashes turn enemies into easy targets even in low visibility.

The Shrouded Sky update also added two new enemies – a flying Firefly armed with a flamethrower and a rolling Comet that explodes on contact. Alongside the hurricane, the update introduced first-wave raider caches with valuable loot, including rare blueprints.
