Bungie reveals season system and matchmaking details for Marathon

Bungie game director Joe Ziegler shared new information about the seasonal system in extraction shooter Marathon.

  • Each season will last approximately 12 weeks

  • Every season starts from scratch with players beginning with minimal resources and gradually growing stronger

  • Content gets reworked each season to support progression

  • Cosmetic items carry over between seasons

We envision each season as a month-long roguelike adventure. Players start with limited resources and must gradually become stronger through various means, carving their own unique path of development.

Additionally, Bungie detailed the matchmaking principles in Marathon – the studio rejected a system that separates players by behavioral style.

Journalists asked whether the game would use a system similar to ARC Raiders, where matchmaking considers aggression levels and matches players with similar behavior patterns. Game director Christopher Ziegler stated there would be no such audience segmentation.

Bungie believes uncertainty about other players' intentions is a crucial part of the shooter – both from gameplay and narrative perspectives. Playable characters are mercenaries working for corporations and other factions pursuing their own goals. However, players will be able to cooperate through voice chat or even give a downed opponent an item for self-revive.

Marathon is scheduled to launch on March 5, 2025 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series.
