New animation leak from canceled Call of Duty-style Doom 4

New footage has surfaced online showing combat encounter pre-visualization from the canceled version of Doom 4, which fans dubbed "Call of Doom 4". The clip reveals what id Software was working on before scrapping this iteration of the game.

The first leak of materials from the canceled Doom 4 occurred back in 2015, when numerous screenshots from a behind-the-scenes trailer appeared online. In 2020, new gameplay footage emerged, in 2022 – three more screenshots, and in March 2023, multiplayer fragments surfaced.

Originally, Doom 4 was supposed to take place on Earth and use mechanics typical of the Call of Duty series, including a cover system similar to Call of Duty or Gears of War. However, during development, id Software concluded this was the wrong direction and canceled the game.

It's worth noting that Doom 3 also differed significantly from the first installments in the series. The original Doom games were perceived as horror titles at release – today they may seem more like action games, but back then they were intense action titles with horror elements. Thanks to John Carmack's new technology, the team wanted to return to these roots. Due to high system requirements, Doom 3 couldn't display many enemies simultaneously – a similar limitation was observed in Doom 2016, where on-screen enemies were significantly fewer than in the classic entries.

After canceling "Call of Doom 4," the studio released Doom 2016, which became a commercial success and was perceived as Doom proper, rather than an attempt to follow current trends.
