No Man's Sky player stumbles upon a "comet" made of two hundred pirate ships
No Man's Sky has long been known for creating unplanned moments that catch players off guard. In a game with eighteen quintillion planets, each session can turn into something no other player has witnessed – whether it's a perfect sunset on a toxic moon or an encounter with a creature resembling a cross between a giraffe and a toaster. But what happened to one player recently goes beyond even the most generous random generators.
During routine resource mining in an asteroid field, a pirate attack warning appeared – and instead of the usual three to five enemy ships, a gigantic mass materialized in space, resembling a comet with a pink-purple tail from a distance. Upon closer inspection, the "celestial body" turned out to be a cluster of approximately two hundred pirate ships stuck together in one point.
When the player approached and opened fire, the swarm instantly scattered in all directions, filling the screen with dozens of engine trails. The spectacle resembled a disturbed wasp nest – ships dispersed in chaotic directions, and the game predictably started choking from lag. The player admitted to panicking and fleeing using an emergency warp.
According to experienced players in the comments, the bug is related to the Outlaw questline. Under certain conditions, the final stage of the mission can glitch, spawning around two hundred enemy ships instead of the standard amount. The situation doesn't occur every time, but those "lucky" enough to encounter it remember it for a long time.
Naturally, other players wanted to reproduce the bug to test their fully upgraded corvettes in a true large-scale battle. Others reasonably wondered whether anyone's PC could handle such a load without frame rate drops.
Curiously, such a bug would work perfectly as a full-fledged game mechanic – for example, an invasion that needs to be stopped before an enemy portal fully opens. You can check full video and system coordinates below:
