Old-school dungeon crawler Underkeep demo coming in March

Rake in Grass studio announced the release of a demo version for Underkeep – a tactical dungeon crawler inspired by classic RPGs from the 90s. The demo will become available on Steam in March 2026, with development of the main game nearing completion.

Underkeep recreates the atmosphere of old-school dungeon explorers with grid-based movement, slow-building tension, and tactical combat. The game combines classic mechanics with modern conveniences – responsive controls, clear visuals, and thoughtful improvements that eliminate old frustrations without losing the spirit of the originals.

Gameplay revolves around a party of four characters whose strengths and weaknesses determine survival strategy. Synergy is critical – a well-assembled team expands tactical possibilities, while a poorly chosen one leads to death. Players will explore handcrafted dungeons, interact with unusual NPCs, discover secret passages, solve ancient puzzles, and engage in turn-based battles where planning matters as much as courage.

Underkeep features an automap system with custom markers for tracking puzzles, locked doors, and locations worth revisiting. Combat requires controlling space and properly managing stamina and mana. Dungeons are filled with hidden alcoves, false walls, optional bosses, and puzzles organically woven into the game world.

The developers promise strange rituals, ghosts, abandoned camps, mysterious symbols, and choices with long-term consequences.

For now, you can add the game to your Steam wishlist.
