Retro 2D action returns in first Huntdown: Overtime trailer
Coffee Stain Publishing and Easy Trigger unveiled Huntdown: Overtime – a prequel to the 2020 original, now with roguelite elements. The new project tells the origin story of bounty hunter John Sawyer, who transforms from an ordinary human into a cybernetic legend. The game retains the distinctive pixel art aesthetic of the original while adding a progression system between runs and deeper character customization.
At its core, Huntdown: Overtime features classic roguelite cycles with intense gunfights. Players hunt down criminal targets while pushing through hostile gang territories – from neon-lit city streets to desolate wastelands. Each death brings experience and new opportunities to strengthen the character. John's partner Tony brings the hero back to the hospital after defeats, where accumulated bounties can be spent on permanent upgrades.
The progression system allows changing playstyles between runs. Developers offer an extensive arsenal of firearms, melee weapons, and tactical gear. Cybernetic upgrades and weapon licenses can be found throughout locations, persisting between attempts. Players can craft unique builds by combining enhanced limbs and experimental modifications – from cryo mods to electric batons.
The visual style of Huntdown: Overtime blends traditional pixel art with modern lighting effects. Developers drew inspiration from early 1980s B-movie aesthetics, creating a grindhouse atmosphere with signature red accents on dark backgrounds and high-contrast visual solutions. According to the Easy Trigger team, they aimed to capture the spirit of that era's arcade halls while avoiding excessive neon nostalgia.
Huntdown: Overtime launches in Early Access during Q2 on PC. The original Huntdown received critical acclaim for its refined gameplay and style, while the new project expands the game's universe by exploring one of the main heroes' backstory.
