New Fable won't have a dog companion

Playground Games showcased the first gameplay of the revived Fable at Xbox Developer Direct, but alongside the announcement of a Fall 2026 release came disappointing news for fans – there will be no dog companion in the game. The feature that became one of the series' hallmarks was cut by the studio's founder.

Ralph Fulton, founder and general manager of Playground Games, admitted in an interview with IGN that he expected the question:

There are some folks on the team that were relishing me getting this question because I cut it a while back.

Fulton explained the decision citing development issues without going into details, adding:

There are a substantial number of people on the team who have yet to forgive me for that decision.

The possibility of the dog appearing in a sequel remains open. When asked about adding the companion in the future, Fulton responded:

I hear you on that. Hey, for those people that still bear a grudge, this is my penance.

Recent example Avowed shows that cut features can return post-launch – that game added the ability to play as non-human characters after release.

Fable launches Fall 2026 on PC, Xbox Series, and PS5.
