Real life caught up to Kojima – AI founders have names straight out of Metal Gear Solid
Hideo Kojima is famous for many things – his (at least meme-level) genius games, endless cinematic cutscenes, and character names that sound like they were generated by a broken random word machine. Hot Coldman, Die-Hardman, Deadman, Heartman – every name in his games literally describes the character's essence with zero subtlety. As it turns out, reality has overtaken Kojima, and in the one field where you'd least expect it: the AI industry.
Observant social media users noticed a striking coincidence. The creator of ChatGPT is named Sam Altman – which can be read as "alt man," i.e., "alternative man." And he runs a company called OpenAI, which originally positioned itself as an open organization but has long since become one of the most secretive corporations in Silicon Valley. The openness survived only in the name – a classic Kojima move where the name says the exact opposite of reality.
Altman's main rival is Dario Amodei, head of Anthropic. The company name comes from the Greek "anthropos" and means "human-centered." Amodei's surname has Italian roots tracing back to the Latin "Amadeus" – literally "loving God" (from "amo" – I love, and "Deus" – God). A human-centered company led by a man whose name means he loves God – Kojima would approve of such on-the-nose symbolism.
But the real masterpiece is Google's Gemini. "Gemini" means "twins" and, figuratively, "two-faced." And this product was released by a company whose unofficial motto for many years was "Don't be evil" – a motto Google quietly dropped back in 2018. A two-faced AI from a company that promised not to be evil. The Metal Gear Solid writing room is giving a standing ovation.
For those unfamiliar with Kojima's work, it's worth explaining the scale of his approach to names. In Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, one of the antagonists is literally named Hot Coldman – "Hot Cold Man."
In Death Stranding, the protagonist is named Sam Porter Bridges – where "Sam" references Uncle Sam, "Porter" describes his job as a courier, and "Bridges" is the name of the organization building connections between isolated cities. His name essentially translates to "American courier who builds bridges."
A character named Deadman is assembled from corpse parts
Heartman ("Heart Man") survived a tragedy that left a heart-shaped crater
And Die-Hardman wears a mask and truly proved to be the most resilient of them all
These "descriptive names" regularly catch fans' attention. Back in 2022, the same meme treatment was applied to Sam Bankman-Fried – founder of the collapsed crypto exchange FTX, whose surname literally translates to "Banker Freed," right before he was sent to prison for a very long time. Now it's the AI industry's turn.
Adding extra flavor to the whole thing: Altman and Amodei are former colleagues whose rivalry has long grown into full-blown enmity. Amodei worked at OpenAI from 2016 to 2020, rising to VP of Research before leaving to found Anthropic over disagreements on safety.
At a recent AI summit in India, both refused to shake hands with each other in a group photo with Prime Minister Narendra Modi – the image went instantly viral.
"Loving God" versus "Alternative Man" – that's literally the setup for a Metal Gear Solid final act.
If Kojima really is writing the script for reality, one can only wonder what twist comes next. Perhaps the next breakthrough AI developer will be named Destroy-Man, heading a company called TotallyHarmless with a product called "Friendship." In Kojima's world, that would be perfectly normal.
