Peaceful lobbies exist in Marathon after all – a whole map extracted together and nobody got shot
One of the biggest talking points around Marathon since its announcement has been the PvP focus. Bungie's extraction shooter is about as far from ARC Raiders as you can get – in that game, most matches feel like friendly walks in the park, with players putting down their weapons to collectively gather mushrooms, toasters, and whatever else. On Tau Ceti IV, though, the rule is simple: shoot first, ask questions later.
At least, that was the thinking before launch. In just a handful of matches since release, players have already made friends with strangers (even if it was to kill a third party together), had a civil chat with someone after a 1v1, and extracted side by side with an enemy squad that had been trying to hunt them down moments earlier.
But all of that pales next to a post from Reddit user Punk Saint. Almost an entire lobby chose peace and extracted together – with screenshot proof to back it up.
"People just kept joining and coming over, [but] nobody shot anyone," they explain.
That many players with their guard down at an extraction point, and not a single grenade thrown into the crowd? Remarkable restraint. Right now, when everyone is trying to finish contracts and track down specific terminals or items, there's not much reason to bring your best loadout and invite trouble. Avoiding bloodshed – or even cooperating with strangers – often turns out to be the winning move.
It'll be worth watching how the atmosphere shifts once players finish the available contracts and turn their attention to farming and holding onto high-end gear.
The fragile friendliness of these early days might not last long in Marathon.
