Matrix 5 director Drew Goddard is deep in his writing cave

Drew Goddard, tapped to write and direct the next film in the Matrix universe, has given his first update on how production is going. The creator of Netflix's original Daredevil series and director of The Cabin in the Woods spoke to Screen Rant about where things stand right now.

"I'm in my writing cave writing. I don't know how long I'll be in that writing cave, but whenever I come out, I'll have news to share."

No details about the cast have surfaced yet, and the studio hasn't confirmed who will be returning to their roles.

As a reminder, The Matrix Resurrections ended on an ambiguous note – Neo survived but found himself trapped in a digital prison, only to escape once again. This time, it was Trinity, played by Carrie-Anne Moss, who pulled him out, effectively stepping into the role of savior.

The fifth film was greenlit in 2024, and it marks a significant moment for the franchise – for the first time, the Wachowskis are handing directorial control to an outside filmmaker. Lana Wachowski remains involved as a co-writer and producer, so it's not a complete departure from the source.

Goddard faces a tough task: rebuilding audience trust in the universe while building on the ending of a film that many received coldly.
