George R.R. Martin found yet another reason not to finish Winds of Winter – a Game of Thrones stage prequel

The Game of Thrones franchise keeps expanding – this time George R.R. Martin announced a theatrical production, Game of Thrones: The Mad King, set to debut at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre this summer.

The play unfolds at Harrenhal on the eve of a jousting tournament, where feasts, lovers, and rumors about the contenders paint a picture of ease. But beneath that surface, a conspiracy takes shape within the inner circle of the bloodthirsty Mad King, while far away the drums of battle are already sounding. The production will span the final years before the events of the novels and promises to reveal a legendary chapter in the history of Westeros.

Martin serves as executive producer. Dominic Cooke directs from a script by award-winning playwright Duncan Macmillan.

The announcement came just days before the season finale of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms on HBO – the series based on Martin's novella series The Tales of Dunk and Egg. Meanwhile, the television universe keeps growing: House of the Dragon season 3 is set for June, and the sixth, still-unfinished novel Winds of Winter remains a work in progress.
