Square Enix survey reignites Chrono Trigger remake hopes among fans
Square Enix has shown little interest in remaking 1995's Chrono Trigger – almost surprising in an era when remakes generate massive revenue for publishers. The JRPG, developed before Square's merger with Enix, is considered one of the greatest role-playing games of all time and partially responsible for popular mechanics like multiple endings and side quests that develop characters.
In recent years, Square Enix has been increasingly turning to its extensive back catalogue. The success of the Final Fantasy 7 remake and various Dragon Quest remakes has clearly inspired the publisher to continue releasing updated versions of decades-old classics.
Against this backdrop, Team Asano – Square Enix's internal team behind Octopath Traveler, Bravely Default and Dragon Quest – recently polled Japanese fans about which game they'd like to see remade. The team is headed by Tomoyo Asano, a veteran Square Enix producer. Team Asano previously announced a game for 2026, though it's unlikely related to this survey, since any title releasing this year is nearly finished.
The survey was posted on ResetEra. One question simply asks – is there a Square Enix title you'd like to see remade in the future?
Other questions are more specific – for example, what type of remake fans prefer: HD-2D, 3D, full remake, "doll" style (visuals similar to Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined), pixel remaster or HD remaster. The survey also asks which elements of a potential remake would increase purchase intent – additional main story content, post-game content or voice acting.
Naturally, there's no guarantee the survey will provide compelling enough evidence for Square Enix and Team Asano to commit to a remake. There's also no certainty that Chrono Trigger will be the most popular choice, though fans have been asking Square for a remake for over a decade.
An HD version of Chrono Trigger was released in 2018, marking the game's first PC release. The 2018 version currently has "Very Positive" reviews on Steam.
