New Dead or Alive game announced alongside Dead or Alive 6: Last Round remaster
Koei Tecmo confirmed a new Dead or Alive game is in development for PS5. The title will be the first entry since Dead or Alive 6, which launched in 2019. The announcement came with a brief teaser trailer celebrating the franchise's 30th anniversary, featuring Kasumi and Ryu Hayabusa battling each other. Sharp-eyed viewers noticed Ryu sports his updated design from October's Ninja Gaiden 4. The company hasn't announced a release date yet.
Alongside the new entry announcement, Koei Tecmo will release Dead or Alive 6: Last Round on June 25 this year. The edition includes all DLC characters and costumes from the original game. The company made no mention of a free upgrade for existing Dead or Alive 6 owners, suggesting the remaster will be sold separately. Alongside the paid version, developers plan to launch a free-to-play variant – details coming later.
The Dead or Alive series started as an arcade game in 1996, then came to PlayStation and Sega Saturn. Dead or Alive 3 and 4 were initially Xbox and Xbox 360 exclusives, but Dead or Alive 5 in 2012 got a wider release on PS3 and Xbox 360. Team Ninja traditionally handles development of the franchise, focusing on hand-to-hand combat with unique martial arts styles for each character.
A notable factor in the series' popularity has been its curvaceous female fighters with physics simulation.
The series' story revolves around the Dead or Alive World Combat Championship – an international martial arts tournament attracting the world's best fighters. After a six-year gap, franchise fans finally received confirmation of the series' continuation, though specific details about gameplay and new features remain unknown.
Dead or Alive 6 is available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series.
