Larian Studios drops a cryptic one-word spoiler for Divinity that's already breaking fan theories
During a Reddit AMA held a month after promising fans deeper insight into Divinity's development, Larian Studios revealed plenty of details – from a potential Baldur's Gate 3 port to Nintendo Switch 2 to the studio's stance against generative AI. But the moment that captured fans' imaginations came courtesy of narrative director Adam Smith.
When a Reddit user asked Smith for "a small spoiler that will sound completely meaningless until we play the game," the response was delightfully cryptic: "Alligator."
That's it. One word. Just "Alligator."
The community immediately began theorizing about what this could mean. Some drew parallels to the infamous bear scene in Baldur's Gate 3 – the widely publicized romantic encounter that helped rocket the game's popularity far beyond typical gaming circles. If a bear made such an impact on Baldur's Gate 3, the logic goes, an alligator could serve a similar role for Divinity.
Design lead Nick Pechenin hinted that Divinity will introduce gameplay mechanics the studio's previous titles lacked, particularly the ability to swim. An alligator encounter in a water-based section would make practical sense – positioning the creature as an environmental threat that creates genuine danger and purpose during swimming sequences.
