American retailer starts selling gold-plated Doom floppy disks for $30 without the game itself
GameStop has put gold replicas of Doom floppy disks up for pre-order, priced at $29.99 apiece. It's a real collectible from Fanattik, but there's no game code or download key included.
So what exactly is Fanattik, the collectibles maker, offering here? An imitation floppy disk coated in imitation gold, packaged in a commemorative box featuring the original Doom artwork, plus a display stand.
Each piece is individually numbered and limited to 5,000 units worldwide. The disks match the real dimensions of a 3.5-inch floppy at 89 x 89 mm, but the protective sliding mechanism doesn't move, and the write-protect toggle is nonfunctional too.
Meanwhile, the 1994 Doom v1.2 shareware release remains completely free to download.
