Nexus Mods finally decided to deal with mods with AI content

Nexus Mods has finally taken on one of the most annoying problems plaguing its platform.

As generative AI has grown more popular, more mods have started using it during development, but users never had a real way to track this.

The single "AI-generated content" tag offered no specifics, lumping together fundamentally different use cases under one label.

AI-generated preview images turned into a separate headache. They often fail to represent what's actually in the mod and mislead users, and spotting them wasn't always easy.

Nexus Mods has now announced an expansion of its tagging system. Instead of one vague label, three mandatory categories are being introduced:

  • "AI-Generated Content" – AI-generated code, interfaces, voices, dialogue, translations, music, and in-game assets

  • "AI Media" – promo art, previews, videos, page descriptions, and any materials outside the mod itself

  • "AI-Assisted" – development led by a human with limited AI use, texture and sound upscaling, concept art that didn't make it into the final mod

The key point concerns the "AI-Assisted" category. Moderators warn upfront that if a mod was primarily built using AI, it must carry the "AI-Generated Content" tag instead.

If a developer opts for the softer label anyway, moderators can demand proof that a human actually did the work – essentially asking to see the creation process.
