A longtime Civ fan shared an old photo of himself playing Civilization 3 and triggered a wave of nostalgia
A post recently appeared in the Civilization fan community that went up and set off a wave of nostalgia for thousands of series fans. User wpazzurri2 shared a childhood photo showing him sitting at a family PC in a classic "computer room," playing Civilization 3.
A massive computer desk with a slide-out tray for the mouse and keyboard, a flat monitor with a VGA connector, a clock sitting next to the screen (presumably to keep track of time), a chunky printer on top of a filing cabinet in the corner – every detail is a portal straight to the mid-2000s. If you think that was "recent," think again – 2006 was two decades ago!
The poster mentioned he bought the game through a Scholastic Book Fair catalog at school, then played it with his dad in hot-seat mode – sitting side by side, passing control back and forth.
Others chimed in with similar memories. Some recalled co-op sessions in Age of Empires with their fathers, others remembered Empire Earth marathons that inevitably crashed in the later eras. One user still keeps a photo on their desk of themselves as a small kid in front of an Apple II, calling it their "founder photo."
The setting itself sparked its own wave of memories. People reminisced about the days when the computer lived in a dedicated room and getting access to it felt almost like a ritual.
"We used to treat the computer with respect."
"The computer wasn't a thing, it was a place. 'Where's dad?' – 'At the computer.'"
The post also brought renewed appreciation for Civilization 3. Several people admitted they still fire up the third entry – some on a modern Mac, others returning to it after Civilization 7 launched, with over 450 hours logged since.
Despite well-known issues with combat balance and corruption in distant cities, for many players this entry remains the favorite in the series.
But the real takeaway from the post isn't about any particular game – it's the reminder itself. We're used to capturing screenshots of achievements and recording gameplay, but almost never photograph ourselves actually playing.
And yet those are exactly the shots that matter most – us, in our home clothes, in front of a monitor, hand on the mouse, world map on the screen – the kind that become the most treasured memories twenty years later. There's something about a photo like this that feels like it was taken in an entirely different era, a time of optimism and the quiet feeling that everything was going to be fine.
Good reason to grab your phone and take a picture the next time you're deep into "just one more turn."
If you have any old-school gaming photos, share them in the comments. Personally, I'm realizing right now that I don't have a single photo of myself playing Civ 3 from the early 2000s.
