PlayStation 6 and Xbox Helix both still on track for holiday 2027
The picture of next-gen consoles is slowly coming together. According to prominent hardware insider KeplerL2, both PlayStation 6 and Xbox Helix are targeting the same launch window – holiday 2027. He wrote on NeoGAF that both devices are still on track for that period.
KeplerL2 also confirmed the same timeline applies to Sony's rumored portable device. That means late 2027 could see three new platforms arrive at once – full home consoles from both companies and a handheld from Sony.
Xbox Helix is the better-known of the two at this point. Insiders have already shared details on its expected performance and architecture, and dev kits are set to go out to developers next year – a sign that game development is ramping up. That said, the fact that dev kits won't arrive until next year does raise questions about whether the console can realistically launch in time, with finished games, by November 2027.
PlayStation 6 has been far quieter on the rumor front, which fueled concerns that Microsoft might gain a significant head start on Sony – similar to how Xbox 360 launched before PlayStation 3, a move that nearly cost Sony an entire generation.
There are also signs that the next generation will look quite different from the current one. Unlike the PS5 and Xbox Series era, where both consoles offered nearly identical hardware, Sony and Microsoft appear to be taking diverging approaches – each with their own strengths and trade-offs.
