SOULM8TE, the M3GAN spin-off with an uncertain future, gets an R rating

SOULM8TE, the M3GAN spin-off, has taken a small step toward an official release: the MPAA has given it an R rating for strong violence, gore, sexual content, graphic nudity, and language. That's notable for a couple of reasons – both M3GAN films were rated PG-13, and the fate of SOULM8TE is still very much up in the air.

Back in December, Universal Pictures didn't just pull the film from its release calendar – it dropped it entirely, handing the original January 2026 slot to another horror movie. Since then, Blumhouse and Atomic Monster have been searching for a new distributor, though nothing has been announced publicly.

The film was first revealed in June 2024 as a standalone story set within the M3GAN universe, with Lily Sullivan playing an AI bot acquired by a recently widowed man trying to cope with the loss of his wife.

In his attempt to create a sentient companion, he transforms what was meant to be a harmless lovebot into something far more dangerous. The cast also includes Claudia Doumit, Isabelle Bonfrer, Emma Ramos, and Sydney Blackburn.

Some footage was screened behind closed doors at CinemaCon in 2025, but nothing has made it to the public. No trailers, no first-look images – nothing.

An official MPAA rating often signals that a project is moving toward a release date, so the situation may become clearer in the near future.
