Repterra is a base-building survival RTS where you fight dinosaur hordes – demo out now on Steam
Chute Apps and publisher MicroProse Software are gearing up to launch Repterra – a real-time strategy game with survival and base-building elements set in a world overrun by dinosaurs.
The story of Repterra drops players into an alternate history. In 1963, explorers discovered an uncharted island in the Indian Ocean, concealed by a magnetic anomaly and home to living dinosaurs from the Triassic period. Poachers smuggled the creatures out despite restrictions, selling them to wealthy collectors who kept them as exotic pets. Captivity made the dinosaurs aggressive, escapes followed, and the elites quietly covered it all up.
By the 1990s, the escaped population had spiraled out of control. Millions spread across the planet, devastating infrastructure and turning entire regions into uninhabitable wastelands. Now humanity is trying to take back what it lost, and the player leads a specialized team tasked with clearing and rebuilding.
Gameplay revolves around constructing sprawling colonies complete with defensive perimeters, production chains, and power grids to keep outposts running. Every structure strengthens the base ahead of incoming dinosaur swarms – the developers promise over 100,000 dinosaurs on screen at once while maintaining a steady 60fps.
One of the core mechanics is dinosaur breeding. Place a male and female in the breeding station and the offspring may come with genetic mutations. Cross-breeding different species is actively encouraged and can produce unexpected results.
Tamed dinosaurs can also serve as mounts – any of the three unit types (soldier, engineer, tamer) can ride one, and each human-and-dinosaur pairing unlocks a unique set of abilities.
Taming wild dinosaurs is its own separate system. Enemy creatures can be lured in with food or distractions, and once tamed, they switch sides and fight for the player.
Repterra features three factions, each with distinct units, perks, and heroes, and each built around a different playstyle – from resource management and mobility to technology, taming, or straight-up combat power. Heroes level up, carry active and passive abilities, respawn after death, and can be customized through genetic mutations.
The game includes 8 replayable maps with meta progression, permanent upgrades and unlockables, pre-match loadout perks, and 4K visuals rendered in a pre-rendered art style.
Repterra is set to release in April 2026 on PC, and a demo is already available on Steam.
