First Supergirl trailer feels like Guardians of the Galaxy 4 – in the best way

DC Studios debuted the first trailer for Supergirl during the Super Bowl broadcast. The film is a spinoff of last summer's Superman and hits theaters on June 26.

The trailer sends its heroine on a wild space adventure packed with action and unexpected encounters – including a run-in with Lobo. The whole thing carries serious Guardians of the Galaxy energy, and that's a compliment.

Milly Alcock stars as Kara Zor-El, Superman's Kryptonian cousin. The character briefly appeared in Superman in a memorable scene revealing she is the true owner of the dog Krypto and has an affinity for partying off-world. The new trailer shows Kara meeting Krypto for the first time, along with footage of her life on Krypton before the planet's destruction.

Director Craig Gillespie described the film as an anti-hero story. "She's got a lot of demons, a lot of baggage coming into this, which is very different from where Superman is in his life," Gillespie said at a previous trailer launch event.

The cast also includes Jason Momoa as fan favorite Lobo and Matthias Schoenaerts as the antagonist Krem of the Yellow Hills. Ana Nogueira penned the script. Beyond Supergirl, DC Studios plans to release Clayface this year – a horror-tinged film with a more modest budget, set for an October 23 premiere. The studio will also debut Lanterns, its HBO Max series arriving in late summer.
