Age of Empires 2 fan presents AI-generated concept for post-apocalyptic Fallout mod
An Age of Empires fan known as SuperDomeDome shared concept art for a desired Fallout-themed mod for Age of Empires 2 – though the art is clearly AI-generated, it provides a rough idea of what a strategy game set in the post-apocalyptic universe might look like.
After watching the first and second seasons of the Fallout series, the author wondered why no one had created a mod or scenario based on the post-apocalyptic universe for the classic RTS game.
The concept shows fortifications in the recognizable isometric style of Age of Empires 2, but with some post-apocalyptic Fallout elements – bunkers, a Vault door, and characters resembling super mutants. Otherwise, the logic is quite broken – you can see stone walls and watchtowers, cavalry, and classic Age of Empires buildings.
Many fans criticized the image, outright calling it low-quality AI slop. Indeed, the original art creator could have put in a bit more effort.
However, the idea of a Fallout RTS resonated with part of the audience. Several commenters admitted that a post-apocalyptic real-time strategy game would be interesting, though some envisioned it more in the style of Age of Empires 3. Curiously, while plenty of real-time strategy games are being released today, none come close to Fallout's potential with AoE 2 mechanics.
That said, it's hypothetically possible to create a full-fledged Fallout mod for Age of Empires 2 and even place buildings as shown in the art.
As for factions, one could easily imagine the Brotherhood of Steel, the Enclave, the NCR, individual cities, and Vaults with sufficient influence. Though there might be issues with unit variety.
