One third of game developers no longer want to visit the United States
GDC organizers published the 2026 State of the Game Industry Report based on a survey of over 2,300 game industry professionals. It revealed growing concerns about traveling to the US for developers. 31% of industry professionals not living in the country have cancelled plans to visit the United States due to immigration policies and gender identity laws. Another 33% are reconsidering future travel plans.
Students and educators of game development programs expressed serious concerns about the industry's future. 74% of the 50 students surveyed are worried about their career prospects due to competition with more experienced laid-off professionals and AI implementation. 87% of educators either expect their students will struggle finding employment after graduation or have already observed these problems. Especially since the same survey determined the layoff situation is quite grim.
One of the surveyed students shared their comment.
There aren't any jobs. Everyone's getting fired.
The political situation in the US is also affecting international collaboration in the industry. 60% of foreign executives and investors stated that current immigration policies have impacted their ability or willingness to do business with American companies. Among US companies with staff of 100 or more, 21% noted an impact on their ability to attract and retain talent.
