GOG wants to bring the original Silent Hill to PC after 27 years
The original Silent Hill turned 27 this week since its PlayStation debut. Despite the game's massive influence on psychological horror as a genre, it has never received a modern port or remaster. GOG.com wants to change that – the digital storefront expressed its desire to bring the game to PC players in a post marking the anniversary.
Nothing is confirmed yet, but GOG.com sounds confident it could make it happen. "If there's one company able to make it available, it's us," the storefront said, calling on players to help push things forward. When users asked what they could actually do, GOG pointed them toward the GOG Dreamlist, DRM-free purchases on the platform, or the GOG Patron program as the most direct ways to support the effort.
The GOG Dreamlist is a community-curated list of beloved games that players want to see preserved. Silent Hill sits in third place with over 116,000 votes. One player put it simply:
"This game simply helped shape me into the person I am today. It still brings so many fond memories of hanging with my siblings late at night, getting scared out of our minds!"
Silent Hill 2 is right behind it in fourth place with 115,000 votes – a clear signal that players aren't just after remakes, they want access to the originals.
Right now, playing the original game means owning a PlayStation or a PS2 for backward compatibility. It's available digitally on the PS3 store, but only after adding funds to a digital wallet – no direct card payments. It was on the PSP store until that shut down in 2021, and it technically works on PS Vita, but only through Remote Play via a PS3. For most people, the options boil down to tracking down original hardware and a physical copy – which runs anywhere from $300 to $2,000 on eBay – or turning to emulation, which brings its own set of headaches.
Konami has yet to show any interest in making its older titles accessible on modern platforms, even as players continue to make clear they want to play the originals, not just updated versions.
