Call of Duty team shuts down standalone Zombies game rumor

The Call of Duty team has officially denied rumors about a standalone Zombies project being in development.

The claims originated from TheGhostofHope on Twitter, who alleged that the team was planning to release a standalone Zombies title alongside the usual annual Call of Duty release. The post also suggested Microsoft was pushing Activision to move away from its yearly release cycle.

The official Call of Duty Twitter account was quick to shut it down. Replying to a Dexerto post on the matter, the team wrote that the "rumor factory is working overtime" and that "this ain't it."

In the meantime, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 topped the best-selling games chart for January 2026 – the second consecutive month it held that spot, having done the same in December 2025. The franchise is clearly in good health.

That said, Activision did recently pull the plug on one of its mobile titles – Warzone Mobile is set to shut down in April.
