Ron Perlman got $40 and a sandwich for the first Fallout and still hasn't played it
Ron Perlman, one of the most recognizable voices in the video game industry, has voiced nearly every Fallout game since the first one launched in 1997. The actor admitted he decided to participate in the project solely for the money and received quite modest compensation for his work.
"They gave me $40 and a sandwich," Perlman shared about agreeing to help Interplay with the first Fallout in a recent episode of The Joe Vulpis Podcast. A year and a half after recording, the studio contacted the actor again to work on the sequel.
A year-and-a-half later, I get a call:
Hey, you remember Fallout?
"No.
"Well, there's a second one."
I go, "Why?"
The actor was informed that the game, which sold 100,000 copies by the end of 1997, had been a huge success.
They tell me the game went through the fuckin' roof. I go, "Really? Cool".
After that came voice work for the third and fourth installments and so on – now Fallout has become a genuine brand.
I didn't see that coming.
Perlman has never played Fallout. He describes his involvement in the original game this way:
I did a couple of lines, and, you know, got my $40 and my sandwich and went home.
I'm not a gamer..., I wouldn't know which game goes into which piece of hardware. I've never played any of the games
Throughout his career, Ron has worked on an impressive list of AAA projects, including Call of Duty, Halo 2, Halo 3 and other titles.
