NVIDIA still plans to invest billions in OpenAI
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang has denied reports of relationship troubles with OpenAI and confirmed plans for a major investment in the ChatGPT developer. According to Bloomberg, the executive told reporters in Taipei that NVIDIA intends to "invest a great deal of money" in OpenAI's latest funding round, calling the upcoming investment "potentially the largest we've ever made."
Huang's comments came after The Wall Street Journal published a report claiming that a previously announced $100 billion deal between the two tech giants "hasn't progressed beyond the early stages" of negotiations. The publication, citing sources familiar with the discussions, reported that NVIDIA's chief had privately criticized OpenAI's business approach for lacking discipline and emphasized the non-binding nature of the agreement.
Huang strongly rejected these claims, calling them "nonsense."
However, the executive clarified that the investment amount in the current funding round won't approach the $100 billion mark.
Last September, NVIDIA and OpenAI jointly announced plans to invest up to $100 billion in building 10 gigawatts of AI data centers. The companies were targeting the second half of 2026 for the first phase of the project to go online. Worth noting that OpenAI itself lacks spare funds for financing – the company is operating at a significant loss and it remains unclear how it will achieve profitability.
